Preparing Your Whelping Kit

Posted on June 28, 2010 by admin

Before the 58th week arrives, you should prepare everything already so that when the time comes that your dam water bag broke you need not to worry where to get this and that so first let me remind you of what you need to prepare;

Your Whelping Kit includes:

  • Newspapers - whelping is a messy thing so you need tons of newspapers to layer it out on the floor then removed everything after.
  • Paper Towels - cleaning the pups and for you too.
  • Sharp Safety Scissors - for cutting the umbilical cord.
  • Quick Stop Powder - to immediately stop the bleeding of the umbilical cord.
  • Betadine - for cleaning the umbilical cord after the cut.
  • Hemostat forceps - for clamping the umbilical cords before cutting.
  • Dental Floss - for tying the umbilical cord after the cut.
  • Surgical work gloves - you will use this for delivering the pups.
  • Digital Thermometer - checking the dams temperature.
  • Bulb Syringe - clearing the pups with problems.
  • Flashlight - in case you need it, example when your dam is outside and you need an extra source of light.
  • Clock - logging the time of puppies born.
  • Notebook - recording the details.
  • Rickrack Ribbon - for identification of the puppies so you need different colors of it.
  • Food Scale - for weighing the pup.
  • Whelping Box - enough size for the dam to stretch, this will be their place for the first fwe weeks of the pups.
  • Incubator Box - it is a small box where you can heat up the ups after delivery.
  • Microwave Heat Pad - you need to put this on your incubator box and whelping box.
  • Fan - to be used not directly to the pups but across the area to avoid extreme heat.

When everything becomes a failure and the dam cannot carry the whelping anymore, you should also prepare your CAR in case you need to rush your dog to the nearest veterinarian.
