This is for anyone who has ever lost a dog.

On Thursday evening, our dog Max wandered off and did not return.

It must be said that our dogs were trusted, perhaps too much, to do
their doggie thing outside the house unsupervised and return at a
predetermined time. Needless to say, that practice is one that must
never be done. It is irresponsible and leaves too much to chance.

My dad went off to check if Max was checking things out at his usual
haunts. He was not. My sister, my husband and I walked all along the
long, main road where he may have sauntered off to, calling his name,
asking people if they had seen a friendly, brown, long-haired aspin
with a bushy tail. They had not.

I told my sister, who had been crying her eyes out, that we would
comb the neighborhood again tomorrow, but we would need to show people
a picture of Max, a detailed description, and mention something about
a cash reward for his safe return.

We distributed flyers on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. We
knocked on doors and stuffed flyers into mailboxes. We walked up to
strangers. We posted colored versions of the flyer on street posts.

In a neighborhood where stray dogs are considered fair game, the
people I handed flyers to were surprisingly sympathetic. One
carinderia owner said losing a dog is like losing a child, and she
promised to text us if she saw anything.

I was trying to be positive until 72 hours after he disappeared,
when there was still no sign of him.

As I write this, I am shedding tears of regret, shame, and pain. I
know that no amount of cathartic writing will describe the pain of
someone whose beloved pet (or family member) has disappeared.

I wonder if he is wandering about some unfamiliar place, trying to
find his way home. I wonder if he has been taken in by some family,
who has tied him up to a post (something he is not used to, he is king
of the garage and the porch in my house) to make him a ferocious guard
dog. I wonder if the neighborhood drunks cornered him and beat him
senseless. I wonder, most of all, if he met his demise, if he thought
he was still in the company of people he could trust. I must mention
that Max is one of the most trusting dogs we have ever had. He even
tried to befriend the neighborhood goat once.

My wish is if he is dead, that his end was quick and painless. My
other wish is if he was alive, that he would come back to us, no
matter what shape he is in. And this is the pain of families of
desaparecidos – the pain of not knowing how the story really ended.

On the other hand, maybe some kind-hearted family noticed him outside
their gate, took him in, and he is now trying to manipulate them into
giving him what he wants with his earnest eyes and non-stop tail
wagging.

Now when I pull into our street I can almost picture him outside our
gate, waiting to be let in as is his habit, but he is not there, and I
go back to wondering again and again what really happened to our Max.

We learned our lesson the difficult, excruciatingly painful way, but
it must be said – we are the humans, we should know better, we MUST
protect our pets from those who have cruel intentions, we MUST make
sure they are always safe. It is our responsibility as pet owners.

Along with this I must say that efforts to educate the public about
treating animals with compassion must continue, with greater intensity
and fervor, because there are people who simply don’t know any better,
or can’t see past their next hangover.

Dear readers, please pray for our beloved Max, who we miss terribly
and long for even if our hopes are fading as the days pass. A part of
us will always be waiting for that day when we will open the gate and
see him sitting there as if he never left.

PAWS, November 15, 2008

Please help Max find his family, call or text them if you happen to know his whereabouts. Thanks.

Hi, Activists!

PETA’s monthly Volunteer Night will be this Wednesday, November 5. Please join us for a fun-filled and productive night. We’d love to see you there!

Volunteer Night is a great chance to meet up with other activists, but more importantly, we get loads of work done—such as stuffing envelopes with leaflets, writing letters, doing online research, making phone calls, and more. In addition, you’ll get to know PETA’s staff members and get updates on campaign news from the past month.

Our office is located at Unit 503, Ferros Building, 176 Salcedo Street, Makati. We’re just a stone’s throw away from Makati Med.

Please feel free to e-mail Rochelle at RochelleR@PETAAsiaPacific.com or SMS her on 0920-497-4679 if you have any questions about Volunteer Night. You can also contact us on 02-817-5292 or 02-818-3668 during office hours.

Thank you for everything that you do for animals. We hope to see you on Wednesday!

Best regards,
Ashley, Jane, Jason, Katrina, Lito, Maria, Min-Hee, and Rochelle

Dogs/Bitches Non Regular Class

Class 12 - Baby Puppy (3 to under 6 months of age)

The Dog Show Sequence

Dog Shows, usually follow a standard sequence and in the case of shows held in the Philippines for All Breeds, below is how it usually goes.

For a Back to Back show (2 Day Show)

For Ring 1 Saturday AM, the Terrier Group goes first followed by Dachshunds Group, the Sighthounds Group, Pointing Dogs Group, and Retrievers-Flushing Dogs-Water Dogs Group. Then in the afternoon the show starts with the Companion and Toy Group, followed by the Scent Hound and Related Breeds Group.

For Ring 2 Saturday AM, the Retrievers-Flushing Dogs-Water Dogs Group goes first followed by Sighthounds Group, Pointing Dogs Group, Terrier Group and the Dachshunds Group. The afternoon starts with the Scent Hound and Related Breeds Group then the Companion and Toy Group.

For Ring 1 Sunday AM, the Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs starts the show followed by the Spitz and Primitive Type. In the Afternoon, the Pinscher and Schnauzer Group and lastly the Best In Show Competition

For Ring 2 Sunday AM, the Spitz and Primitive Types starts followed by the Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs and in the PM, the Pinscher and Schnauzer Group followed by the BIS Competition.

The Competition Sequence

Breed Level

1. 1st Place Winners (Dog) Compete for Winners Dog and Reserve

2. 1st Place Winners (Bitches) Compete for Winners Bitch and Reserve

3. Winners Dog and Bitch compete for Best of Winners

4. Best of Winners compete with Specials for Best of Breed, Runner Up BOB and BOS.

5. Best in Philippine Bred in Breed Competition

6. Lastly the Best Baby Puppy in Breed

Group Level

1. All BOB winners go in the Ring

2. BIG is awarded, followed by BIG 2, BIG 3 and BIG 4

When a Dog/Bitch gets a group placement, the Runner Up of the Dog/Bitch will enter the ring to compete with the other dogs/bitches

How the Show Works:

You will enter your dog/bitch in its class and in its class it would compete against other dogs, there are 2 places in the class, the 1st placer and 2nd placer, All the first placers of all the classes from Class 1 - 5 will compete for the Winners Dog Award and Reserve Winners Dog then all the 1st Placers from Class 6-10 will compete for the Winners Bitch Award and the Reserve Winners Bitch award.

After the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch have been chosen, they will both compete for the Award of Best of Winners. Whoever wins the Best of Winners Award will go on to compete with the Specials for the award of Best of Breed, Runner Up Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex in Breed

The Best of Breed winner will then compete in the Group (there are ten groups under the FCI) and will get the chance to win BIG4,BIG3,BIG2 or BIG. If by chance your dog/bitch (The BOB Dog/Bitch) places in the group, the Runner Up Best of Breed will go in the Ring to compete for the rest of the BIG Awards.

The BIG of the group would then compete for the most coveted award of all the Best In Show and the Runner Up Best In Show…

The Ribbons and Trophies

If your dog wins in its class, even just 2nd Place you will already get a Ribbon. There is a Color Coding scheme for Ribbons and the PCCI Usually use these colors.

Red - For 2nd Place in the Class

Blue - For the 1st Place in the Class

Purple and White - For the Reserve Winners Dog and Bitch

Purple - For the Winners Dog or Winners Bitch

Blue and White - Best Of Winners

Red and White - Best of Opposite Sex

White - Runner Up Best of Breed

Green - Best Philippine Bred in Breed

Light Blue - Runner Up Best Philippine Bred

Neon Pink - Best Baby Puppy in Breed

Trophy - Best of Breed, Best In Show,Runner Up Best in Show, Best Baby Puppy in Show, Best Philippine Bred in Show

Big Big Ribbons - Best in Group, Best In Group 2, Best In Group 3 and Best in Group 4.

Not All Shows Give out the same, some don’t give out Trophies for BOB.. it all depends on the Show. Above is for PCCI Shows.

The Titles at Stake:

Philippine Champion - You need to get 15 points, of those 15 points, there must be 2 major wins (a major win is a win of 3 - 5 points) earned under 3 different judges. A Philippine Champion is given a certificate stating that the Dog/Bitch is a Champion.

Philippine Grand Champion - You need to get 25 points after the Philippine Championship and 3 Majors are needed. A Grand Champion will get a BIG BIG Trophy, with its name and owners name engraved in it plus a list of shows the dog entered to get the Title is given. The Trophy is usually awarded during the last PCCI Show in December.

Hall of Fame Award - 100 Points are needed after the Championship and also 4 Group placements is required.

Asian Champion - Title awarded during an Asian Kennel Union Show, Your dog/bitch must be rated excellent and must place either BIG, BIG2 and BIG3 to be awarded the Title, The BIG4 even if rated excellent will not be awarded the title.

International Champion - Title awarded by the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale which is based in Belgium). You need 4 CACIBS (Certificat d’Aptitude au Championnat International de BeautŽ ), in order to get a CACIB, your dog must be given a rating of excellent by the FCI Judge. These FCI shows are usually held in December here in the Philippines. The 4 CACIBS must be earned in 3 different countries, under 3 different judges, in shows organized by the FCI.

A dog can have the first CACIB at 15 months old, and the last one must be earned 12 months later than the first. So the minimum age for a dog to become International Champion is 27 months.

This is a very expensive undertaking (especially if you own a big breed) since you will have to travel to other countries for the 3 more CACIBS needed. Even if you have 4 CACIBS, all earned in the Philippines, that does not qualify for the International Champion Title.

Top Dog Award - Given to the Dog/bitch the most number of points accumulated in a year.

Top Philippine Bred Award - Given to the dog/bitch, local born, who gets the most number of points for Philippine Bred.

Breeder of the year Award - An award not for a Dog but for the Breeders. Even if you dont own the dog but as long as you are the breeder you get points towards this award. For every dog/bitch you bred that becomes a Champion you get 10 points, for every dog/bitch that becomes a grand champion you get 20 points.

The Computation of Points:

After your dog/bitch has competed it is now time for you to do your mathematics. A dog/bitch will only start getting points when it wins Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, a Class win has no points at all.

Points are based from a table and the PCCI uses 5 different categories (categories A-E) to compute the points. The PCCI uses different point systems for different areas and the breeds are also categorized differently.

Metro Manila and Cavite

Category A - Labrador Retriever

Category B - German Shepherd Dog

Category C - Boxer and Rottweiler

Category D - Am Cocker (ASCOB) and Mini Pin

Category E - All other breeds recognized by the PCCI

Luzon (Except Metro Manila and Cavite)

Category A -

Category B -

Category C - Labrador Retriever and Pomeranian

Category D - Am Cocker (ASCOB), Boxer, Rottweiler and Shih-Tzu

Category E - All other breeds recognized by the PCCI

Visayas and Mindanao

Category A -

Category B -

Category C -

Category D - Boxer and Rottweiler

Category E - All other breeds recognized by the PCCI

Table of Points:
Total Entries per sex in Regular Class

Points CAT A CAT B CAT C CAT D CAT E
(Majors = Points 5-3)

5 there must be 16-up 13-up 10-up 7-up 6

4 there must be 13-15 10-12 8-9 6 5

3 there must be 9-12 8-9 6-7 5 4

(Minors = Points 2-1)

2 there must be 6-8 5-7 4-5 3-4 3

1 there must be 3-5 3-4 2-3 2 2

How to Compute Points for:

Winners Dog - Count all the Regular Class Dogs Entered in a Breed. Example, 5 Regular Class Chihuahua Dogs (Category E) will be equal to 4 Points.

Winners Bitch - Count all the Regular Class Bitches Entered in a Breed. Examaple, 3 Regular Class Pomeranian Bitches (Category E, Except in Luzon Category C) will be equal to 2 Points (In Luzon 1 Point)

Best Of Winners - The Best of Winners will always get the same number of points of the dog/bitch he/she beats. If the Winners Dog has 1 Point, Winners Bitch has 4 Points. Winners Dog wins over the Winners Bitch, Winners Dog will get 4 Points, Winners Bitch get to keep her 4 points. If Winners Bitch wins BOW, her points will remain the same at 4 since her points are already bigger then the WD’s, WD’s points remain at 1.

Best of Breed - Example, there is 1 Regular Class Male and 3 Regular Class Bitches plus 3 Champion Dog and 4 Champion Bitches. BOW goes to Regular Bitch, to count for Points.. add the number of Bitches (3) + 3 Champ Dogs + 4 Champ Bitches = 10, look at the table and see what will be the point equivalent for 10 Entries.

Another Example:

I’ll use the Great Danes categorized under E (to use as an example in computing points).

You would need to note how many dogs were entered. For the Dogs, count all the dogs entered and for the Bitches count all the bitches entered. Do not count absent and disqualified.

Let us say you own a Great Dane Dog and there were 5 dogs entered, your dog wins Winners Dog, he will get 4 points. For the bitch meanwhile there is only 1 entry, the bitch will get 0 points.

Next is the Best of Winners Award competition, your Dog is awarded Best Of Winners, his points will remain the same at 4 and the Winners Bitches points remain at 0, but if the Winners Bitch wins Best of Winners she will get the same number of points as the dog so in this case the bitch will get 4 points while the dog will get to keep his 4 points.

And now on to Best of Breed, if your dog or the bitch get lucky and win Best of Breed over the specials, the BOW will get additional points… and the Specials get no points if they lose. Runner Up BOB does not carry points also, but Best of Opposite Sex in Breed does carry points.

Lets now go to the Group, I have a hard time understanding this but thanks to Coh, I can understand this better. I’ll update this portion from time to time to make things clearer

I am going to Use Coh’s Example

Working Group:

Rott BOB = 3 Points

Dobe BOB = 4 Points

Husky BOB = 2 Points

Dane BOB = 5 Points

Saint Bernard BOB = 1 point

Assuming that the ROT gets the BIG, Dobe Gets BIG2, Saint gets BIG3 and Dane gets BIG4, The Rott, Dobe and Saint all get 5 Points since they beat the Dane which carried a 5 point major.

Other Awards at the Show

Another award I didn’t get to mention is the Best Philippine Bred Award, for this award, only Local Born Dogs/Bitches can get this award…. there is also a Best Philippine Born in Group and also the Best Philippine Born in Show.

And again, another award, the Baby Puppy award…. no points are given to this award.. all Baby Puppy winners per breed will get to compete in their respective groups and all group winners will get to compete for the Best Baby Puppy In Show award. Fee for a Baby Puppy entry is very minimal and it is good exposure for the puppy.

Hershey was picked up by a baranggay’s animal control facility, and was kept for four months, hoping they would find her owner. Unfortunately, no one turned up to claim her. She had a damaged left eye, but was otherwise healthy. Extremely shy at first, Hershey turned out to be a very sweet and loyal dog. She loves human company and is quite content just staying by your side while you work or read a book. Hershey is gentle enough to be around small children. A few days ago her damaged eye was finally cleaned out and stitched up - she is Hershey the One-Eyed Dog. Already spayed, she is ready to find her new forever-family.

Ely was rescued along with four other dogs in a trucking parking lot. They were a wild band of strays with severe mange (galis), very skinny, and living on scraps from garbage. Ely had no hair then, and had scabby wounds throughout his body. This was a year and a half ago, in March 2007. Today you would swear the Ely you see must be a different dog. He now has grown a soft beautiful brown coat and has gained a lot of weight. A small stubborn patch at the end of his tail refuses to grow any hair, though. Maybe to remind us all of his past and how far Ely has gone. Ely is approximately 7 years old, already neutered, and ready to go home with a new forever-family. His happy, friendly, and sweet disposition makes him a great canine companion.

HISTORY: Rescued in Paranaque by the
PAWS rescue team. Ely was one of four
dogs abandoned at a trucking lot. They were
bald, mangy, and emaciated at time of
rescue.
PERSONALITY: A couch potato, not active.
GENDER/AGE: Male, approx. more than 7
yrs old
DATE OF ADMISSION: March 2007
NEUTERED: Yes
OK WITH KIDS? Yes
OK WITH OTHER DOGS? Yes
OK WITH CATS? Yes
TYPE OF GUARDIAN: Even a novice dog
guardian can adopt Ely.

Piolo was rescued from a pound who reportedly did not regularly feed or water the dogs under their care. Indeed, Piolo was positively skeletal when he arrived at the shelter a month ago. Despite his emaciation, Piolo was the happiest, friendliest, and sweetest dog you could meet. He was happy to meet everyone and would play with anyone. His indomitable spirit made him an instant shelter favorite with volunteers and visitors. Though a new dog, he has already completed the necessary vaccinations and is ready for adoption. Piolo’s new forever-family would be very very lucky to have such a sweet dog.

Jerby was abandoned along with another dog by his former family, when the family had to leave the country and unable to take their dogs along with them. A PAWS shelter denizen since November 2007, he is considered by most PAWS volunteers to be the sweetest dog in the shelter. His companion was lucky to have been adopted already, a few months back. A lot of PAWS shelter adopters neglect to choose Jerby maybe because he is not as attractive as the other shelter dogs. But what Jerby lacks in appearance, he more than makes up for in heart. Already neutered, Jerby is ready to go home with a new forever-family who would be lucky to have this very sweet and loyal companion.

PAWS Dogs in Healthy Options magazine are up for adoption. So if you are looking for a companion they have a list of dogs available for compatibility tests, who knows it might be you.
